Key point: a measurement method accurate for both focal plane and central shutter

Contrary to most of the testers available on the market, the Baby Shutter Tester mark II measures the speed by taking into account all amount of light that hits its sensor, exactly as a silver film does.

By making the sum of all the variations of light detected during the release of the shutter, the Baby Shutter Tester mark II also perfectly takes into account the transition phases, where the shutter is not completely open and not completely closed.

The benefits are

  • an excellent accuracy, even at high speed where the transition phase are predominant.
  • this excellent accuracy is obtained with both focal plane and central shutters.
  • no calibration procedure needed

Light source

In order to perform accurate measurements, the Baby Shutter Tester mark II needs a source of light that does not flicker, contrary to most of artificial lights.

  • For focale plane shutter testing, the built-in LED is perfect
  • For central shutter testing, the optional light diffuser is necessary. Because the whole surface of the shutter is involved in the enlightment of each single point of the image : the light source must cover evenly this surface.

Verification of the accuracy of the tester

Two different verification methods have been used to verify the accuracy of the tester:

  • Graphic test method: the output of the analogic stage of the tester is displayed on an oscilloscope, and the signal width is compared with the displayed result of the tester
  • Rotating wheel method: a wheel rotates at a known speed (3 m/s at the rim level), and a 3mm slit on the rim simulates a focal plane shutter at 1/1000s. The measurement result is compared with this expected 1/1000s value.

Both methods have confirmed the accuracy of the Baby Shutter Tester mark II.
